Cottage Pie


  • 1 tbsp of oil
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 500g minced beef
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 400g can chopped tomatoes
  • Beef stock cube dissolved in 4oz of water
  • Dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • 950g potatoes
  • Knob of butter/sprinkle of cheese
  • Salt and pepper


  1. Preheat oven to 200°C/Gas Mark 6.
  2. Prep the vegetables.
  3. Place potatoes in a pan, cover with water, bring to the boil and simmer until cooked. Drain and mash with butter.
  4. Add oil to a large pan, add in the onions and carrots. Fry for 5 mins.
  5. Add the mince and stir.
  6. Sprinkle in flour, mixing well.
  7. Add tomatoes, stock and and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to the boil.
  8. Reduce heat to a simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Spoon the mince into a dish and spread the mash on top. Use a fork to make lines in the mash and sprinkle on cheese.
  10. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes or until the pie is golden. Serve with your favourite vegetables.
