Burton Town Deal – Active Travel Improvement Scheme
Staffordshire County Council together with Amey will be carrying out phase two of walking and cycle improvements along Borough Road. This will be an extension of the recently delivered project on Station Street, linking up the town centre to the Railway Station.
The package of improvements for walking and wheeled users will include, pedestrian crossing upgrades, footway improvements, additional dropped crossings where necessary segregated cycle facilities and cycle parking.
The cycle infrastructure projects are being promoted by Staffordshire County Council and East Staffordshire Borough Council and as the local highway authority, Staffordshire County Council through the established Infrastructure+ partnership will be responsible for delivery of the projects.

The improvements along Borough Road, between Derby Street and Burton Town Hall, will include:

The bus stop outside No. 14 Wellington Street.
Programme of Works
Works is scheduled to start on 5 January 2026 and are planned to be completed on 7th May 2026, a duration of approximately 18 weeks. The works will be suspended for two weeks from 15/02/26 to allow for other essential works in Burton with traffic management removed except the Curzon Street road closure.
The overall project works are subdivided into several construction phases. The Traffic Management strategy requires five operational phases, including the set up for Byrkley Street Signal Upgrade Scheme - Phase 5.
Temporary traffic lights with pedestrian crossings will replace the current traffic signals at Byrkley Street, Derby Street, Borough Road and Waterloo Street Gyratory while the roadworks take place.
Diversion routes will be signed but please feel free to use other routes that might be more convenient to you.

Diversion route will be via Station Street, Union Street, Orchard Street, Evershed Way, Shobnall Road and Wellington Street.
Access and exit to Curzon Street will be via Wellington Street and remain in place until 27/03/26.

Traffic on Welington Street will travel southbound in a one-way direction from Borough Road towards Curzon Street whereby it will become two way traffic
Traffic from Borough Road will be able to turn left onto Waterloo Street
Diversion route will be via Shobnall Road, Evershed Way, Orchard Street, St Peters Bridge, Stapenhill Road, Bridge Street, Horninglow Street, Derby Street and Borough Road.
