A38 Branston Interchange Proposed Highway Improvements

Early Works

Early works on Branston Road will include new drainage, ducting, electrical works, and a temporary site access. This will need a one-way road closure during the February half-term week, to carry out the works safely.

The closure starts on February 10, with a planned completion on the February 28. Vehicles will be able to travel westbound on Branston Road from the A38 towards Tatenhill but not eastbound from Tatenhill to access the A38. A diversion route will be signed via Tatenhill, Rangemore and Needwood. Additional safety measures and signing are planned to be provided along the diversion route.

Proposed Parkway traffic management arrangements

Following on from the A38 Branston interchange scheme Branston Road one way closure which is due to be removed on 28 February, the next phase of traffic management is required in order to safely alter the road alignment at the Parkway / B5018 Main Street junction. This work will involve the installation of new drainage, kerbing, traffic signals ducting, chambers as well as new electrical works. A reduced vehicle movement traffic management arrangement is required at the junction of the A5121 Parkway and B5018 Main Street. The proposed temporary arrangement will prevent vehicles turning right into the B5018 from Parkway and also prevent vehicles turning right out of the B5018 into Parkway whilst the traffic signals are not operational. There are also associated lane closures on Parkway required to enable the works to also be carried out safely.

The local diversion route will advise vehicles to use the existing roundabouts each side of the B5018 at the A38 interchange roundabout and the A5121 Parkway roundabout adjacent to Morrisons. The no right turn in or out arrangement will commence from 3 March to the July, after which the arrangements will be revised and further details provided.

Separately the A38 northbound off-slip road will be closed over night on the night of the 19 April with diversions signed.

During this period, the western half of the A38 Interchange will also be closed. There will be no access to Branston Road or Tatenhill from Parkway, and no access to the A38 Interchange from Branston Road or Tatenhill. Both south bound on, and off slip roads will be open. Diversions will be in place.

During the May period there will be a series of one-way night closures of Parkway and the B5018 (between Parkway and A38 interchange) between 20:00hrs and 06:00hrs.

08/05/2024 – 10/05/2024 Parkway westbound and B5018 Main Street junction to complete surfacing works.

During the July period there will be a series of one-way night closures of Parkway and the B5018 (between Parkway and Main Street) between 20:00hrs and 06:00hrs.

02/07/2024 – 05/07/2024 Parkway westbound and B5018 to complete lining and signal works.

08/07/2024 – 11/07/2024 Parkway Eastbound to complete lining and signal works.

Diversions will be signed via Wellington Road, Derby Road, the A5018 and the A38.

Major improvements to the A38 Branston Interchange near Burton and linked roads is set to begin early 2024 after £6million was allocated to the scheme from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

It followed a successful bid to the fund by Staffordshire County Council in 2022. Significant funding is also being provided by a private developer to complete the new improvement scheme.

The scheme will improve access to and from Burton via the A38 and provide key infrastructure to support the large scale housing and business development with associated job creation in the Branston Locks site. This comes after previous successful highway schemes at Branston Locks.

The proposed scheme, due to begin in January 2024 and reach completion in spring 2025, involves work on the following roads:

  • A5121 Branston Road
  • B5018 Main Street Parkway
  • A38 Branston Interchange Roundabout

Works will consist of the following and can be seen on the General Arrangement drawing.

  • Road widening to provide additional capacity on the A38 junction and Parkway
  • Slip road widening to improve access and safety to the interchange roundabout.
  • Upgrading of traffic signals on Parkway
  • Signalisation of the A38 interchange roundabout.
  • Improvements to signing and road markings.
  • Landscaping on the roundabout and Parkway.

In addition, Staffordshire County Council plans to provide additional money through Levelling Up funding for resurfacing works on the Branston interchange roundabout.

People can find out more by reviewing the general layout and scheme proposals drawing.

Regular updates will be issued throughout the scheme, including any traffic management and diversion routes.
