The extended cycleway will run from Burton Town Hall to the Railway Station, joining up with the existing cycleway.
A major scheme to extend the cycleway through Burton town centre will begin next month, making it easier and safer for people to walk or cycle around the town.
The project, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, will see a new two-way cycle track built along Borough Road to connect the railway station to Burton Town Hall.
Crews will also resurface footways and parts of the road, upgrade bus stops and traffic signals, and refresh road markings as part of the scheme.
Work is planned to start on Monday 5 January and will be delivered in five phases over around five months. Different sections of Borough Road, Curzon Street, King Edward Place and Byrkley Street will need to close at various points during construction.
Temporary traffic lights and clearly signed diversions will be in place, and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
The £1.2 million project is being funded by £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal fund allocation and £220,000 from Staffordshire County Council.
Patrick Allen, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Highways North, said:
“This is great news for Burton. Extending the cycleway will give residents safer and more convenient ways to travel around the town. Linking the railway station directly to the town centre makes everyday journeys easier, whether people are getting to work, school or local shops.
“We know roadworks can be inconvenient, so our teams will be working hard to keep disruption as low as possible. Once complete, this route will be a real asset for Burton and will support a healthier, better-connected town for years to come.”
This project is the second phase of a wider programme to improve active travel routes across Burton and follows the recently completed cycleway on Station Street.
Letters will go out to residents and businesses in the area shortly, and further updates will be shared as work progresses.
