CX046 Carriageway reconstruction B5018 Union Street Crossroads and New Street junction Burton Upon Trent

Works will take place at the junction of Union Street, including Orchard Street and New Street crossroads. Works to include New Street (traffic island), junction of High Street and sections of Manor Drive. Works will include the removal of the existing carriageway surface and replacing it with a new surface (and associated preparatory works known as ‘civil works’), alongside kerbing replacement, replacement of ironwork and minor footway works.

When are the works taking place?

The work  will commence on Monday 14 July 2025.

How long will the works take?

Approximately 4 weeks to complete the works.

Details of work

Beginning on Monday 14 July 2025 at 7:30am, we’ll begin the scheme of works at the
B5018 Union Street Crossroads where we’ll start the civils works. Multi-way temporary traffic lights will be in place until 7pm on Friday 18 July 2025.

From Monday 21 July to Friday 8 August 2025 (Monday to Thursday, inclusive of Friday morning) between the hours of 7pm to 6am overnight road closures will be in place. During the overnight road closures, we’ll start the civils works at the New Street traffic island.

Following on from the civils works on both sections of the scheme, we’ll begin removing the existing carriageway surface and re-setting the carriageway ironworks. The new carriageway surface will then be laid, ahead of emptying the highway gullies and finally replacing the new road markings and traffic loops. All works are due to be completed by Friday 8 August 2025.

Due to the size and scale of construction machines being used and to ensure the safety of the general public and workforce, the carriageway surfacing works at both locations will be carried out under overnight full road closures.

To allow the carriageway reconstruction works to be carried out safely, and to minimise disruption to businesses and the bus services, we’ll be working overnight when traffic volumes are lower.

A signed diversion route will be in place during the closures; along with designated
personnel at either end of the closure points to offer assistance with residential properties and business access. Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the road closures when safe to do so.

Pedestrian access along the length of the works will be maintained throughout.

During the carriageway overnight reconstruction works, there will be parking restrictions in place on the highway during the road closures. Businesses along the areas of work will be open as usual with limited access for periods of time whilst materials are being removed and cured. This is for safety of the public and the safety of the workforce. Designated personnel will be positioned at either end of the closure points to offer advice and assist with access to properties and businesses within the closure points. Regrettably, bus stops along the scheme of works will be suspended during the overnight road closures. If you require any further information about this service, please speak to your bus operator.

Unfortunately, with any major highway works, some disturbance is unavoidable, and there may be short delays even on the approaches to the closure points. We must ask that you drive carefully and slowly through any sections of live roadworks for both the workforces and your own safety.

Please note that all dates are subject to change due to operational requirements and weather conditions. Weekend working may be used where necessary.

The works may at times be noisy, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disturbance caused. We’ll do our best to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. We like to thank you for your patience during this works.
