S278 Sandon Road, Stafford – Highway Improvements and Section of New Road

This highway project is a Section 278 (Highways Act 1980) agreement between Bloor Homes and Staffordshire County Council to deliver highway improvements and a section of new road to accommodate their housing development site.

Please see the location plan

The works include the construction of three new priority junctions on Sandon Road to serve the new housing development, along with associated highway improvements:

  • Realignment improvement works
  • Carriageway new construction and resurfacing works
  • Widening of existing footways to create a 3m shared footway/cycleway
  • Construction of new standard footways and shared use footways (cycle and pedestrian)
  • Installation of an uncontrolled crossings across the new accesses
  • New drainage system
  • Provision of street lighting
  • Utility diversionary works
  • Reduced speed throughout scheme extents from National Speed Limit to 30mph. 40mph buffer zone to be implemented where necessary on approach to scheme extents.

Further details of the proposed works can be seen on the scheme General Arrangement drawings:

The scheme will be delivered by Amey on behalf of Staffordshire County Council.

When are the works taking place?

The works are due to commence on 8 June 2026.

When will the works be completed?

The programme is due to last approximately 11 months, with a planned completion in Summer 2027.

What effect could the works have on me?

To allow the works to be carried out safely, temporary traffic management including a road closure and multi-way temporary traffic signals will be required for the works duration. The timing of the lights will be optimised to ensure efficient flow of traffic through the works.

Please refer to the below traffic management plan:

Phase 1 and 2: June to November Phase 3 and 4: November to completion

Night-time road closures will also be required for the surfacing works for approximately 2 weeks towards the end of October and again at the end of April. A diversion route will be provided.

The road closure may lead to some inconvenience and delay to journeys through the Hopton area. We recommend allowing more time for journeys during the works.

Will I be able to access my home/business?

Access to homes and businesses is to be maintained. Any access restrictions during the Night-time Road closures will be communicated by the site team to those directly affected.
