S278 Creswell Grove

Update – 14 May 2026

Why was the traffic management and lane closure on A5013 Creswell Grove removed shortly after it was installed on Monday 11 May 2026?

Traffic management and a lane closure were installed on the A5013 Creswell Grove on Monday 11 May 2026, with the arrangements being closely monitored on site.

Unfortunately, several vehicles ignored the advance warning signage and continuing to travel towards the point of closure. This included HGVs, which led to safety concerns for both road users and the site workforce.

As a result, the Principal Contractor made the decision to remove all traffic management from the network. Due to these safety concerns affecting both the travelling public and the workforce, the traffic management will not be reinstalled this week (week commencing 11 May). However, works have continued off-line (outside the carriageway) to maintain construction programme progress.

Following a review of the Phase 1 traffic management proposals, including the associated works on the National Highways network, it has been decided to amend the arrangement so that the lane closure permits access along the A5013 Creswell Grove towards the M6 Junction 14 (Stafford), rather than from M6 Junction 14 (Stafford) towards Great Bridgeford. Consequently, access from M6 Junction 14 (Stafford) to Great Bridgeford via the A5013 Creswell Grove will not be permitted.

Traffic management and lane closure (access towards Stafford only) will be in operation from 6:00am on Monday 18 May 2026

The decision to alter the traffic management layout has been made due to the safety concerns observed on Monday 11 May and the works to remove the A5013 Creswell Grove/M6 Junction 14 roundabout splitter island being moved from a week 1 activity to further into the construction programme.

Phase 1 and 2 of the works include:

  • Excavations of up to approximately 3 metres in depth for the installation of new highway drainage within the westbound (to Great Bridgeford) lane of A5013 Creswell Grove.
  • Installation of statutory undertakers’ apparatus
  • Widening of the A5013 Creswell Grove westbound carriageway
  • Resurfacing works of the existing A5013 Creswell Grove

Please note that the safety of both the road users and the site workforce is paramount. Any road users who fail to comply with the traffic management measures in place will be reported to the Police.

With any major road scheme, there will unfortunately be significant disruption, so we would like to thank people for their patience and understanding during the works period.
