Wolseley Canal Bridge, A51, Little Haywood, Stafford

Staffordshire County Council together with Amey will be carrying out bridge refurbishment works at Wolseley Canal Bridge, A51, Little Haywood, Stafford.

The bridge is a single span filler beam structure constructed in the 1955 and refurbishment works are proposed to maintain its structural performance and integrity. This phase of works will include:

  • Installation of new VRS and ground beam.
  • Re-waterproofing of the deck.
  • Parapet improvements and resurfacing.

Phase 2 will include concrete repairs with a canal closure but no road closure. Phase 2 works are due to commence January 2027 following confirmation.

When are the works taking place?

The scheme will commence on 7 July 2026.

What is the duration of the works?

24 weeks.

How will the works be carried out?

Temporary traffic lights will be used on the A51 from 6 July 2026 to 20 November 2026 (about 20 weeks).

Bishton Lane will be fully closed from 6 July 2026 to 18 December 2026 (about 24 weeks).

The closure will be from the A51 junction, going north for about 60 metres, up to the entrance of Wolseley Bridge Farm.

People will still be able to get to homes and businesses along the closed section.

During the works a diversion route shall be in place as follows:

When approaching from the north towards Bishton Lane

  • Diversion west along Bellamour Lane
  • At the junction, turn left onto A51

When approaching from the south the above diversion route applies in reverse.

What effect could the works have on me?

We take care to make sure that work is completed with the minimum of disturbance to the local community but as with any road closure, some delays may occur.

How you can help us 

  • Please keep children away from the works to ensure their safety. 
  • Always adhere to the road closures and follow the diversion routes.
  • Please drive slowly and with caution through the works when gaining access to frontages.
  • Check your shoes before entering your property or car to make sure there is no bitumen from the works.
