Frequently asked questions

What work is planned?

The Safer Routes to Weston Road Academy and Veritas Primary Academy scheme is led by Staffordshire County Council as part of its Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

The work will happen in two phases.

Phase 1

  • Introduce a 30mph speed limit on:
    • A518 Weston Road between A513 Beaconside and Blackheath Lane
    • Blackheath Lane near Weston Road High Academy
  • Add new double yellow lines on A518 Weston Road to stop parking between:
    • The A513 junction and the existing crossing near Weston Road Academy
  • Ban stopping on the ‘School Keep Clear’ markings outside Veritas Primary Academy

Phase 2

  • Improve the shared footway and cycleway between Barona Way and Veritas Primary Academy
  • Build a new toucan crossing on A513 Beaconside near The Beacon Group
  • Move the existing toucan crossing on Weston Road closer to the Hydrant Way roundabout
  • Extend the shared route across the entrance to The Beacon Group using a raised crossing, giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists

What are the aims of the scheme?

The scheme aims to:

  • Improve safety for pupils, families and road users at school times
  • Make it easier to walk or cycle between the schools and nearby housing areas
  • Provide a safe, high quality route for everyday journeys
  • Encourage people to walk or cycle instead of driving short distances

How will this benefit me?

As a local resident, you will:

  • Have safer and more convenient walking and cycling routes
  • Be able to choose active travel instead of driving short trips
  • Save money on travel costs
  • Benefit from better air quality and a cleaner environment
  • Improve your physical and mental health through more active travel

How is the scheme funded?

The scheme is funded through the County Council’s Highways and Transport Capital Programme.
This supports the delivery of the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

When will the work take place?

  • Phase 1: planned for early 2027
  • Phase 2: planned for early 2028

Phase 1 will focus on speed limits and parking restrictions, phase 2 will deliver the new routes and crossing improvements.

What is a shared footway and cycleway?

This is a path that both pedestrians and cyclists can use.

Why are double yellow lines needed?

Parking near Veritas Primary Academy is causing problems:

  • Vehicles block the pavement, forcing pedestrians into the road
  • Parked cars restrict traffic flow, including buses and emergency vehicles

Double yellow lines will help keep the road and pavement clear.

What alternatives are there for getting children to school?

The school is developing a School Travel Plan with the County Council. This includes options to reduce car use, such as walking and cycling including a walking bus.

What is a walking bus?

A walking bus is a group of children who walk to school together with adult supervision.

  • Parents drop children at a safe meeting point near the school
  • Trained adults lead the group on foot to school

Will crossing facilities be improved?

Yes, Phase 2 will include:

  • A new toucan crossing on A513 Beaconside
  • A relocated toucan crossing on Weston Road for easier access
  • A raised crossing at The Beacon Group entrance

What is a raised crossing?

A raised crossing is slightly higher than the road surface. It:

  • Makes drivers slow down
  • Shows clearly that pedestrians have priority
  • Follows the Highway Code rules introduced in 2022
