A34 Highway Improvements, Stafford. Town Centre to Weeping Cross

What are we doing?
We will be carrying out maintenance and infrastructure improvements along the A34 Corridor, from Weeping Cross to the Town Centre.
The scheme includes road and transport improvements including road and bridge maintenance work, active travel, passenger transport and street lighting improvements on the A34, between Stafford Town Centre and the A34/A513 double traffic island junction at Weeping Cross.
Roads affected include A34 Lichfield Road, North Walls, Queensville Roundabout, Queensville, Radford Bank, Baswich Lane, Cannock Road and Weeping Cross.
The roadworks are planned to be carried out in eight phases. Works started in early June 2024 and are planned to be completed January 2026. Bus services will be affected between Queensville Roundabout and the Town Centre.

Road Closure - Lichfield Road at Queensville Bridge
for the installation of highway drainage
- Monday 21 July between 8pm – 6am
- Tuesday 22 July between 8pm – 6am

One way closure and diversion between Riverway & Queensville Roundabout for works in Phase 5, 5a & 6.
- Monday 30 June until Friday 17 October
- The direction of flow will be out of town.
- The local diversion route will be Silkmore Lane, Rickerscote Road and A449 Rising Brook and Wolverhampton Road.

- A provisional date of Saturday 12 July between 6pm and 6am maybe required if works on 11 July are delayed.

Phase 4a - Queensville Stores – Queensville Bridge (Completed June 2025)
Phase 5 - Queensville Bridge – Above Deck (SCC Funded) Construction 30/06/25 – 19/09/25*
On Sunday 6th July and Monday 7th July Lichfield Road, at Queensville Bridge, will be closed between 8pm and 6am to undertake the installation of traffic management measures and for the removal of the existing carriageway surface

Phase 5a - Queensville Stores - Queensville Avenue
Construction 30/06/25 – 17/10/25
- Drainage Repairs and Improvements
- Replacing worn out carriageway for approximately 120m from Queensville Stores
- Carriageway patching
- Refer to Phase 5 for works to Queensville Bridge – Above deck
Works are planned to be carried out under a one-way closure and diversion between Riverway and Queensville Roundabout.
The direction of flow will be out of town. The local diversion route will be Silkmore Lane, Rickerscote Road and A449 Rising Brook and Wolverhampton Road.
There will also be
- Single lane entry onto Queensville Roundabout from A34 Queensville, Ampleforth Drive, Silkmore Lane and Queens Retail Park.
- Temporary 3 way traffic control at Riverway / Lichfield Road junction, temporary pedestrian crossings, 20mph temporary speed limit and no right turn on adjoining side roads
- Temporary footway closures and diversions
Dependent upon the activities there may be a need to close St Leonards and Queensville Avenue with its junction with A34 Lichfield Road from time to time.
Final surfacing will be carried out under night-time closures normally between 8pm - 6am late August 2025, with dates to be advised.
On Monday 21 July, Tuesday 22 July and Wednesday 23 July Lichfield Road, at Queensville Bridge, will be closed between 8pm and 6am to undertake highway drainage works.

These works will be carried out with a combination of one-way road closures and diversion, temporary pedestrian crossings, footway closures and diversions together with night time closures for surfacing as for Phase 5 and 5a.

Phase 7a - Bridge Street - Lichfield Road (Gyratory)
Construction 18/08/25 - 26/09/25 (for 6w)
- Pedestrian and cycle crossing / lane Improvement
- Right turn lane into Bridge Street at Newport Road junction
For the traffic signal upgrade works temporary traffic signals will be in operation in lieu of permanent signals with footway works carried out with lane closures.
Resurfacing & lining works at Newport Road / Bridge Street junction will be carried out under nighttime closure, dates to be confirmed.

Phase 7b - Bridge Street - Lichfield Road (Gyratory) Construction 20/10/25 – 14/11/25
Advance works 16/06/25 – 30/06/25 for this phase.

- Bus Priority Measures between St. Leonard's Avenue & Bridge Street
