Adding and updating news articles

Contents

Please note: You should not edit the news article page. This may break the formatting of the page.

Adding or editing a news article

To add, edit, or remove a news article from the news page, click on “news article” on the left panel. This will open a list of current articles. To create a new article, click on “add new” at the top of the page.

To edit an existing article, click on its title in the list.

To remove an article, mouse over the article’s title and click on “trash”.

Title

The title of the article. Keep this short, ideally a single sentence.

Main contents

In the main content editor, add the contents of the article. You can add any content you like here, as it will only be displayed when a user clicks to view the whole article.

Accessibility guidance

Don't be tempted to use bold formatting or BLOCK CAPITALS to help text stand out - use headings where applicable and only use bold where necessary.

If you are adding any hyperlinks, Please ensure that you use text within a sentence for your hyperlink rather than displaying a naked link on a page such www.staffordshire.gov.uk. A screen reader will read every letter of the naked link, which won't be a great experience!

Excerpt

This is the short article description that appears on the main news page. Keep this short, ideally one paragraph, and only text.

Main image

To select a main image for the article, click on the '+' button in the main image field. This will open the media library where you can select a photo. Alternatively, you can click on “upload files” in the top left of the media library to add new files. Once selected, the '+' button will change to a small version of the image.

The image will be cropped and resized to fit the news listing page, but will be displayed larger on the detailed article pages. Try to avoid tall, thin images. Square or wide images are better.

Publish Date

Please note: Your article will not display if you do not enter a publish date.

Click on the 'publish date' field to open a calendar and select the date and time the article will be published.

If you set the date to be in the future, the article will not display on the site until that date has passed. You can still share the hidden article using the “Permalink” displayed at the top of the edit page, underneath the title.

News articles are displayed in date order, with the most recent shown first. If you want to affect the order the articles of the same day are shown, you can use the time of day. The time is not shown on the site, but it's used when ordering the articles.
