Work starts to extend Burton town centre's cycleway along Borough Road next week.
Work to extend the cycleway through Burton town centre will begin next week, making it easier and safer for people to walk or cycle around the town.
The £1.2 million scheme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, will create a new two-way cycle track along Borough Road, linking Burton railway station directly with the Town Hall.
As part of the project, crews will also resurface footways and sections of the road, upgrade bus stops and traffic signals, and refresh road markings along the route.
The first phase of work will start on Monday 5 January and will involve a road closure between No.19 Derby Street and the Borough Road junction, along with a lane closure on Borough Road up to its junction with Wellington Street.
During this time, clearly signed diversion routes will be in place, directing traffic towards the town centre via Wellington Street, Shobnall Road, Evershed Way, Orchard Street and Union Street. Access to the Travelodge and Station car park from Derby Street will be maintained.
This phase is expected to take around two weeks, with crews working to keep disruption to a minimum.
The project is funded by £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation, alongside a £220,000 contribution from Staffordshire County Council.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“Extending the cycleway is a positive step for Burton. It will give people safer, more practical ways to get around the town, whether they’re commuting, heading into the centre or travelling to the station.
“We know roadworks can be disruptive, but this is a long-term investment that will benefit everyone. Our teams will do everything they can to keep inconvenience to a minimum, and once complete, this route will be a real asset for the town.”
The scheme is the second phase of a wider programme to improve active travel routes across Burton, following the recently completed cycleway on Station Street.
Letters have been sent to residents and businesses in the area, and further updates will be shared as the work progresses.
