Staffordshire County Council proposes to implement an Active Travel Scheme along Chell Road, Foregate Street and Castle Hill in Stafford

 The works comprise:

  • Reduction of the speed limit to 20mph along Chell Road
  • Upgrade of 3 pedestrian crossings to Toucan crossings (cycle crossing facilities) including provision of raised tables at each key crossing locations
  • Provision of new segregated, steppedlevel cycle tracks (one-way and two-way)
  • Provision of shared use cycle/pedestrian footways in particular locations
  • Provision of a contraflow cycle lane along Castle Hill
  • Provision of new uncontrolled cycle crossing point across Doxey Road
  • Provision of new warning and regulatory traffic signs
  • Installation of new road markings
  • Installation of new cycle markings on both the carriageway and footway/cycleway
  • Installation of a bus stop cycle bypass for the bus stop on the northern side of Chell Road
  • Installation of new priority crossing for pedestrians and cyclists across Glover Street

Scheme linked to Gaol Square Signal upgrade, and Structural Maintenance (carriageway resurfacing) scheme on Chell Road/Gaol Square

When are the works taking place?

Active Travel Scheme:

Monday September 11 2023 – Wednesday March 13 2024

Gaol Square Signal Upgrade:

Thursday 14 March 2024 – Friday 2 May 2024  (expected)

Structural Maintenance :

TBC

When will the works be completed?

The Chell Road works are programmed to last approximately 24 weeks using a one way system on Chell Road (westbound travel permitted), a full closure of Doxey Road,  various lane closures and a full road closure to Chell Road. Diversion signs will be provided. Details of the maintenance schemes will be provided closer to the start of the works.

Will I be able to access my home/business?

Access to frontages and businesses will be maintained at all times. Provisions for pedestrians and cyclists will be provided. Emergency service access will be maintained at all times.

Doxey Road will remain closed at Broadeye roundabout junction to direct traffic along Pans Road to access the A34 and Newport Road.  This is to ensure Chell Road traffic does not block back into Gaol Square Roundabout and to facilitate the works at the Doxey Road/Chell Road junction.Vehicular access on to Chell Road will be prohibited during the road closure period but signed diversion routes will be in place.

What effect could the works have on me?

Delays should be expected in all the road networks linking to Chell Road and Gaol Square Island during the construction period due to the temporary Traffic Regulation Orders in place throughout the works.

Buses services stopping on Chell Road will carry on operating as usual, although temporary bus stops may have to be provided for short periods of time.

How you can help us

You can help us to get the job completed more efficiently by following this advice:

  • Please keep children away from the works while they are being implemented to ensure their safety.
  • Account for possible delays when planning journeys.
  • Adhere to all Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders in place (one-way, closures, etc…)
