Support for Children with Additional Needs
Helping eligible children take part
At Staffordshire County Council, we want children who are eligible for HAF to feel welcome.
We know every child is different, and some children may need extra help to join activities.
We work with activity clubs (providers), families and partners to help children take part in a way that is safe, fun and right for them.
How we support children that have additional needs
All HAF clubs should be friendly and welcoming.
Before extra support is added, providers will try simple changes to help children with additional needs join in. These may include:
- Changing activities so they are easier to take part in
- Giving children a quiet space if they need a break
- Using pictures or simple timetables to help children understand the day
- Making small changes to the space
- Talking to parents and carers about what the child needs
Many children with additional needs can take part with these changes.
Extra support
Some children may need more help to take part safely.
If this happens, the provider, family and HAF team may look at extra support, such as:
- More help during activities
- A parent or carer staying to support their child
- Extra staff support if available
Extra support is looked at for each child and depends on what is needed and what funding is available.
Working together
Parents and carers are very important.
When you book, please share as much information as you can about your child. This helps providers plan the right support.
Our promise
We are committed to:
- Making HAF open to as many children as possible
- Working closely with families
- Helping providers support different needs
- Removing barriers where we can
- Making sure children have safe, fun and positive experiences
