£2.3m Derby Road resurfacing scheme starts next month

• A major three-month long scheme to resurface Derby Road will begin on 11 May.

• Work will be carried out in phases, including overnight resurfacing from July to minimise disruption.

• The project will improve road conditions on a key route into Burton, making journeys smoother and safer for all users.

Reaction to government structure’s fund announcement

• Staffordshire County Council says it will do everything it can to secure funding from the government’s new “Structures Fund” to repair key local structures.

• The council plans to bid for funding for Chetwynd Bridge (a Grade II* listed bridge near Alrewas) with an estimated project cost of about £27m.

• Staffordshire has 500+ structures over 100 years old and current funding would take “more than 500 years” to repair them all.

• Plan for improving and repairing Staffordshire schools over 2026/27 period approved by Cabinet.

• Capital Programme for Schools 2026/27 will see facility upgrades and building repairs at over 60 schools.

• Improvements also include sustainability upgrades to improve insulation and be better for the environment.
