Staffordshire Trading Standards backs campaign to tackle rogue roofers

• Staffordshire County Council are supporting a campaign to help people against rogue roofers.
• Fraudulent tradespeople usually target elderly residents, homeowners with older properties or places with high property values.
• Advice being offered by Trading Standards includes being wary of periods of high demand, of cheap quotes and of cold callers or uninvited visitors.

Burton cycleway works passes project milestone

• Phase two of the Borough Road cycleway works is now complete and remains on track for a May finish.

• There will now be a two-week pause on the project to allow for other essential road repairs on Stapenhill Road.

• Work on the cycleway will restart at the beginning of March.

Family history made easy thanks to county’s historic resources

• Staffordshire County Council's archives and heritage service offers residents help and resources to explore their family history.
• Staff and volunteers can help researchers at Staffordshire History Centre and the Access Point in Lichfield Library on certain Tuesday mornings In February and March.
• People can use FindMyPast, a genealogy website containing countless historical records, to track their family histories.

Campaign urges young people to take stand against scams

• Staffordshire County Council is supporting the Young Friends Against Scams campaign, which provides guidance to young people on protecting themselves from scams.

• The campaign features learning tools to teach young people how to spot fraud, which exists across countless areas such as buying concert tickets, gaming purchases and fake photography/modelling services.

• Young people are asked to sign up as a Young Friend Against Scams to share advice that they have learnt to others.

Children help plant new fruit trees at Cannock Chase

Local pupils have helped to plant 30 pear, apple and cherry trees in Pye Green, as well as a mini forest.

The project was funded by Defra's 'Trees for Climate' programme.

The project aims to teach children new skills, support wildlife, and create a space for the community to enjoy for years to come.

The council is introducing its first Community Safety Strategy, a three year plan to improve safety across Staffordshire.

It sets out a new approach focused on prevention, early action, and shared responsibility.

Priorities include protecting vulnerable people, creating safer places, tackling root causes of harm, and ensuring clear accountability.

Libraries to celebrate National Year of Reading with unique touring Comic Box Collection

• A touring comic book collection and exhibition will be travelling across Staffordshire.

• Over 1,500 comics donated to Staffordshire Libraries will tour the county's libraries across a 2-year period as part of the National Year of Reading 2026.

• The collection includes X-MEN, Guardians of the Galaxy, Simpsons comics and much more, plus the work of comic book artist Kieron Gillen, who grew up in Staffordshire.

Illegal cigarettes seized as another Lichfield shop ordered to close following joint enforcement raid

• Staffordshire County Council's Trading Standards team supported Lichfield District Council and Staffordshire Police in the closure of a shop that had sold illegal cigarettes.

• Goods seized from shop include over 11k illicit cigarettes and more than 3kg hand rolling tobacco worth more than £6,000.

• On Friday 30 January, Cannock Magistrates’ Court granted a Closure Order for Mini Market for the maximum permitted period of three months, effective immediately.
