Motorists in Staffordshire are being encouraged to compare fuel prices while retailers are reminded of their pricing responsibilities.
Trading Standards officers at Staffordshire County Council have issued the reminder amid concerns about rising petrol and diesel costs.
The team is encouraging drivers to use price comparison websites including the new Fuel Finder before refuelling.
Officers are also working with retailers who sell fuel to make sure they are aware of their responsibilities when it comes to selling fuel and displaying prices clearly and accurately.
Under the government’s Fuel Finder scheme, petrol filling stations are legally required to report fuel prices to a central database and to update those prices within 30 minutes of any change. This helps ensure that the prices shown to motorists are accurate and up to date.
Anthony Screen, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Resilience at Staffordshire County Council, said:
“With the increase in the price of fuel we’ve seen over recent weeks, it’s more important than ever to shop around for the best prices before filling up. Using trusted price comparison tools is a good way to find the best value in your area.
“Our Trading Standards officers are working closely with fuel retailers to make sure they are aware of their pricing responsibilities. Clear and transparent fuel pricing helps drivers make informed choices, so it’s important that prices are displayed properly at the pump and are kept up to date.”
People with concerns about petrol pricing can report them on Trading Standards’ Report It webpage.
