Works along Gaolgate Street and North Walls, Stafford
Works are due to commence on 17th February 2025 for approximately 9 weeks. The works form part of the Department for Transport Levelling up fund investment in Mid-Staffordshire’s Road Network.
The works consist of walking and wheeling improvements between Chell Road and Queensway Roundabout including:
- Provision of Shared-use Footway at North Walls (Access Road) including a 1.5 m kerbed build-out.
- Traffic Island reshaped at Stafford bus station.
- North Walls reduced to a single lane, with the provision of an advisory contraflow cycle lane North Walls (Access Road) to A34 Queensway.
- Priority change at Malt Mill Lane junction to favour North Walls traffic. Northern footway (opposite Malt Mill Lane junction) to be shared use.
- Proposed Two-way segregated track to merge with existing cycle facility at North Walls and A34 Queensway.
- Shared cycle route link across Gaolgate Street
- Re-surfacing raised plateau at junction of North Walls and Malt Mill Lane
The works will also involve associated site clearance, drainage, earthworks, partial demolition and re-building of existing planting bed, kerbing, footways, surfacing, traffic signs and road markings.
To undertake the works safely, various traffic management measures will be used including:
- Road narrows and footpath diversions along North Walls
- Road closure and diversion to Gaolgate Street between 27/03/25 – 08/04/25
- Road closure and diversion to North Walls / Malt Mill Lane Junction on Sunday 13/04/25
- Road closure and diversion to North Walls / Queensway Junction on Sunday 06/04/25
