Planned Cycle and Walking Improvement Works Mill Street, Church Street and Ringway, Cannock

Scheme Update 22 January 2024

Staffordshire County Council is carrying out walking and cycling improvements to Hednesford Road, Church Street, Mill Street, Ringway and Allport Road, Cannock. These works started last week and are programmed to take approximately 12 weeks. Some of these works comprise of upgrading of puffin crossing and improvements to uncontrolled crossings, shared footway/cycleway between Hednesford Road and Allport Road and improved footway between Mill Street and Church Street.

Following discussions with National Grid there is an essential requirement to lay two 11kv cables to provide a new supply to Cannock Hospital. Both the County Council and National Grid will be working collaboratively to deliver both schemes within this area from Monday 22nd January 2024. Although this will inevitably cause additional disruption, the teams will try to minimize it where possible. This will also remove the necessity to have several separate construction periods and additional extended length of disruption at this location.

However, this does mean that there will be further planned works within Cannock Town until possibly May/June 2024 to provide:

  • Extension of 11 kv cables to substation at the rear of Cannock Hospital
  • Carriageway re-surfacing works at Beecroft Road roundabout

These works will require a combination of night-time closures, traffic lights and lane closures. As stated, the teams will minimize disruption where possible throughout the works.

Further details will be provided in due course.

Staffordshire County Council are carrying out significant works at Mill St, Church Street and Ringway, Cannock, as they start work on a £500,000 investment in the local area. The team will be providing shared cycle routes, upgrading crossing points, widening existing footways and providing a new link from Allport Road to Beecroft Road Car Park.

The work is taking place between Mill Street and Allport Road along Mill Street, Church Street and Ringway

When are the works taking place?

The works commenced on 08 January 2024.

What is the duration of the works?

The duration of the works is 12 weeks and are planned to be completed on 26 March 2024

Will I be able to access my home/business?

When completing construction activities, civils works will utilise lane closures to allow safe working and enable vehicle flows to continue around the works.

A road closure will be necessary where the existing street lighting is to be relocated at the junction of Hednesford Road and Lichfield Road. Details of which are still to be determined but the approximate duration will be between 1-2 days.

During road closure phases access within the closure points will be restricted. A signed diversion route will be in place to provide access to either end of the works.

To undertake the works safely, various traffic management measures will be used, including:

  • Lane closures to Church Street, between Queens Square roundabout and Lichfield Road roundabout, eastbound and westbound (access will be maintained into Chase Centre Retail Park – McDonalds / B&M / Rice Bowl / Compton Care Shop)
  • Lane closure to A34 Ringway (eastbound and westbound) between Beecroft Road car park and Queens Square roundabout
  • Lane closures to A34 Mill Street between Queens Square roundabout and Mill Street

Access will be maintained to properties at all times with footway diversions provided where required.

What effect could the works have on me?

We take care to make sure that work is completed with the minimum of disturbance to the local community but as with any major works, some minor traffic delays may occur.

Although we will do our best to ensure that noise pollution is kept to a minimum, it is likely that construction noise will be heard particularly when works are in progress.

Please take care to plan your journeys and if necessary move vehicles to an accessible location during work phases (public letters will be delivered to affected properties with specific scheme details).
