School place planning in Stafford Borough

Stafford Borough is made up of two areas:

  • Stafford
  • Stone

Different parts of the borough use different school systems:

  • Stafford uses a two‑tier system:
    • Primary schools (ages 4–11)
    • Secondary schools (ages 11–18)
  • Stone uses a three‑tier system:
    • First schools (ages 4–9)
    • Middle schools (ages 9–13)
    • High schools (ages 13–18)
    • Stone also has a Catholic primary school (ages 4–11)

To plan school places, the borough is divided into smaller planning areas based on where schools are and how pupils move between them.

Stafford

Stafford has:

  • 33 primary schools
  • 6 secondary schools

Recent and Planned Changes

  • St. Leonard’s Primary School is being relocated and expanded.
    • This will provide 15 extra Reception places every year from September 2023.
  • Two new primary schools are planned to open in the next five years:
    1. Beaconfields Primary & Nursery School (Stafford North)
      • Opening September 2024
      • Will provide 30 Reception places each year
    2. Burleyfields Primary School (Land West of Stafford)
      • Opening September 2025
      • Will also provide 30 Reception places each year
  • A new secondary school is proposed to open within the next five years (opening date still to be confirmed).
    • Until then, existing secondary schools in the area will need to expand capacity.

Stone

Stone has:

  • 10 first schools
  • 1 Catholic primary school
  • 2 middle schools
  • 1 high school

Recent Expansion

  • Manor Hill First School was expanded by 125 places during the 2020/21 academic year.
    • This expansion adds 25 extra Reception places each year, increasing year by year.
    • All year groups will be in place by September 2025.

More school places may be needed in Stone in the longer term.

New Schools Summary (Next Five Years)

The borough is expecting three new schools:

  • Beaconfields Primary & Nursery School – 1FE (210 places), opening September 2024, run by Creative Learning Partnership Trust
  • Burleyfields Primary School – Opening September 2025
  • One new secondary school – Opening date to be confirmed
