Active travel schemes

Staffordshire is developing four active travel schemes to support safer walking, cycling, and wheeling, funded by the Department for Transport.

Active travel construction

We have been awarded over £3 million by the Department for Transport through the government’s Active Travel Fund to help deliver Staffordshire's Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). These long-term projects aim to enable people to cycle, walk and wheel more safely around our neighbourhoods and town centres.

The LCWIP can be found on our walking and cycling page.

Improvement scheme designs

The designs prioritise healthier, more sustainable forms of travel, helping people access local services more easily and enjoy public spaces, while encouraging smarter, healthier travel habits over time.

Current and future schemes

Designs are being finalised for two schemes in Newcastle-under-Lyme: one enhancing cycling from Newcastle town centre to Keele University, and another connecting the A52 George Street cycle route to Newcastle Greenway via Station Walks. More details are available via the Newcastle tab.

A project pipeline is being developed to seek funding for future schemes. In addition to Newcastle, projects in Stafford, Burton, Rugeley and Chasetown have been identified. More information will be available shortly.

Managing disruption

While every effort is made to minimise disruption during improvement works, temporary delays may occur due to traffic management systems. We appreciate your patience and look forward to the benefits these improvements will bring.

To report any issues related to the works, please report a fault online or follow the contact instructions on site signage.

A view of traffic disruptions in the area can be found on our roadworks map
