Active travel schemes

Staffordshire is developing four active travel schemes to support safer walking, cycling, and wheeling, funded by the Department for Transport.

Stafford Western Access Route Improvements

The scheme made routes safer and better for walking and cycling by adding:

  • A new segregated cycle track along Chell Road, linking to the Isabel Trail and shared facilities on the Stafford Western Access Route.
  • Wider footways for pedestrians.

Key Changes

  • Broad Eye Roundabout: Left-turn lane narrowed, so the cycle route can continue through Doxey Road into Chell Road.
  • Lamb Inn crossing: Central refuge removed and replaced with a single-stage Toucan crossing for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Bus stop redesign: Cycle route now bypasses the stop to avoid conflicts with pedestrians.
  • Chell Road: Reduced from three lanes to two near Gaol Square to make space for the cycle lane into Foregate Street.
  • Gaol Square exit: One lane into Chell Road to allow room for the cycle route and upgraded crossing.
  • Speed limit: New 20 mph limit along Chell Road for safety.
