Active travel scheme
Active Travel England is part of the Department for Transport. It was set up to deliver the government’s walking and cycling plan called Gear Change. The aim is for half of all trips in towns and cities to be walked or cycled by 2030, making England a great place for walking and cycling.
Main Goals
- Build better streets and routes for walking and cycling, following the design rules in Gear Change and Local Transport Note 1/20.
- Make walking and cycling central to transport, town planning, and health policies, with long-term funding.
- Help local councils include active travel in all their work, giving them new powers and training.
- Keep cyclists safe by reducing road danger and providing safe paths and fair road rules.
Staffordshire
Staffordshire County Council has received money from the Department for Transport through the Active Travel Fund (Tranche 2). This supports the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). These projects aim to make walking, cycling, and wheeling safer and easier in neighbourhoods and town centres.
The schemes focus on healthier, greener travel. They help people reach local services, enjoy public spaces, and encourage long-term changes in how we travel.
