St Edward Street, Leek
As part of Active Travel England’s initiative to improve local infrastructure, Staffordshire County Council has been awarded funding to provide a new crossing facility within Leek town centre. Amey Highways, on behalf of Staffordshire County Council, will be undertaking highway improvement works on St Edward Street, Leek, to install a new zebra crossing.
The scheme has been developed in response to increased pedestrian activity in the area and aims to provide a safer, accessible and designated crossing facility for pedestrians and wheelchair users.
The proposed works include the installation of a new zebra crossing on St Edward Street, together with associated footway widening on the eastern side, kerb realignment, dropped kerbs and tactile paving. The works will also include new belisha beacon poles with integrated lighting, associated ducting, carriageway resurfacing on the approaches to the crossing, footway reinstatement, and new and refreshed road markings. In addition, a new uncontrolled crossing facility will be provided on High Street, adjacent to its junction with St Edward Street, to further support safe and accessible pedestrian movements in the area.
When are the works taking place?
The works are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 21 July 2026.
When will the works be completed?
The works are expected to take around three weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions.
Will I be able to access my home/business?
To allow the works to be carried out safely, a road closure will be in place for the duration of the scheme. During this period, a clearly signed diversion route will be provided.
Southbound traffic will be diverted via Church Street, Stockwell Street, Ball Haye Street, Haywood Street and Brook Street, while northbound traffic will follow a short diversion via Sneyd Street, Salisbury Street and Church Street.
Please note that the road closure will affect access to St Edward Street from the Sheep Market and High Street junctions. Access will remain available from alternative routes, and access to frontages and for emergency services will be maintained via these junctions where required.
Footway closures will also be required at times during the works; however, alternative pedestrian routes will be provided at all times. We kindly ask pedestrians to take extra care when moving through the working area.
Please be assured that local businesses will remain open as normal throughout the works. Access to properties and businesses will be maintained wherever possible, and while some disruption is unfortunately unavoidable, Amey Highways will make every effort to minimise inconvenience and delays.
What effect could the works have on me?
Some disruption is unavoidable. You may experience delays, particularly while the road closure and diversion route are in place.
There may also be short periods where access to your property or business is temporarily restricted, although this will be minimised wherever possible. You may notice some noise and increased activity during working hours. We recommend allowing additional time for journeys while the works are in progress.

- Please keep children away from the works to ensure their safety.
- Please drive carefully and follow the signed diversion route.
- Please take extra care when walking near the works area and follow any temporary pedestrian routes provided.
- Check your shoes before entering your property or car to make sure there is no bitumen from the works.
- Account for possible delays when planning journeys.
