There will be a small change to the schedule of works on the Borough Road cycleway project in Burton to ensure the scheme continues to progress well.
The £1.2 million project, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, is building a new two‑way cycle track along Borough Road to link Burton railway station directly with the Town Hall.
The scheme is funded by £900,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation, with an additional £200,000 investment from the county council to carry out other essential highways repairs along the route at the same time.
The project is being delivered in five phases and was originally due to move into its fourth phase on Monday 16 March. However, during construction, crews identified unexpected utility issues beneath the road.
As this work needs to be resolved in coordination with utility companies, the order of phases three and four has been swapped to avoid delays.
As a result, the scheme will now move into phase four on Thursday 12 March.
During this phase, there will be a road closure on Borough Road between No.37 and Wellington Street. There will also be lane closures on Derby Street between No.10 and the Borough Road junction, and on Wellington Street between No.17 and Borough Road. These closures will remain in place until 13 April.
Once the utility issues have been resolved, crews will return to complete the remaining two days of phase three works on King Edwards Place and Wellington Street, starting from 14 April.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“It’s not unusual for roadworks to uncover unexpected utility services beneath the surface. You don’t always know what’s there until work is under way.
“To keep this project moving and avoid unnecessary delays, we’ve changed the order of the phases while we work with utility companies to resolve the issue. This means our crews can stay productive and we're still on track to complete the scheme as planned.
“When finished, this cycleway will improve connections through Burton town centre and make it easier for people to choose walking or cycling for everyday journeys. We’ve also invested around £200,000 to carry out other road repairs along the route at the same time, so residents aren’t faced with separate sets of roadworks later on.”
The Borough Road cycleway project is funded by £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation, alongside a £220,000 contribution from Staffordshire County Council.
