The second of five phases to extend a cycleway in Burton town centre has been complete, and now there will be a two-week pause so that other repairs can take place in the area.
The £1.2 million scheme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, will see a new two-way cycle track built along Borough Road, linking Burton railway station directly with the Town Hall.
It will join up with the existing cycleway that runs along Station Street, helping to make active travel in and around the town centre easier and safer.
Over the last five weeks, crews have been working on the section of Borough Road between Station Court and the Curzon Street junction.
With this now complete, work will pause for two weeks so that surface dressing pre patching, kerbing, footway and ironwork repairs can be carried out along Stapenhill Road without overloading the network and causing major disruption.
Borough Road will reopen for drivers during this time, but a road closure will remain on Curzon Street for everyone’s safety. Temporary traffic lights will also remain in place on Borough Road at the Derby Street and Wellington Street junctions.
Work on the cycleway will then restart on Monday 2 March when crews will work on Wellington Street between Curzon Street and No.16 Waterloo Street, including its junction with King Edwards Place.
During this third phase, frontages between Shobnall Road Roundabout and Curzon Street will be access only.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“I’m pleased to see this scheme making good progress and remaining on track for a May finish. It will mean a better-connected Burton, improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists and more active travel encouraged locally.
“We’re now going to pause work on the cycleway for two weeks so that disruption is minimised while our crews get on with other essential road repairs in the area. Thank you to everyone for their ongoing patience.”
As part of the Borough Road cycleway project, crews are resurfacing footways and sections of the road, upgrading bus stops and traffic signals, and refreshing road markings along the route.
The project is funded by £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation, alongside a £220,000 contribution from Staffordshire County Council.
