Work starts on next stage of Burton cycleway project

Work to extend a cycleway through Burton town centre has restarted, following a planned two-week pause to accommodate essential road repairs in other parts of the town.

The £1.2 million scheme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, will create a new two‑way cycle track along Borough Road, linking Burton railway station directly with the Town Hall and connecting with the existing cycle route on Station Street.

The recent pause in works allowed highway crews to carry out pothole patching on Stapenhill Road, preparing it for surface dressing later this year. The timing of both schemes was carefully planned to avoid too many roadworks happening at the same time and to help keep traffic moving.

Crews have now started working on Wellington Street between Curzon Street and No.6 Waterloo Street, including its junction with King Edwards Place.

This is the third of five phases of the project and is expected to last around two weeks, with work taking place between 7.30am and 4.30pm.

There will be road closures between Shobnall Road roundabout and Curzon Street, between Curzon Street and No.16 Waterloo Street, and on King Edwards Place between Rangemore Street and Wellington Street.

Properties within these sections are access only and a signed diversion route is in place for drivers.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“The Borough Road cycleway project is coming along nicely and remains on track, which is good to see.

“Importantly, we paused this work for two weeks so that our crews could give some much-needed attention to Stapenhill Road without adding unnecessary pressure to the road network. That careful coordination means we can now move forward with the next phase while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“When complete, this project will deliver a safer, better‑connected route through Burton's town centre and support more people to walk or cycle for everyday journeys. I’d like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience while this important work is completed.”

The Borough Road cycleway project is funded by £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation, alongside a £220,000 contribution from Staffordshire County Council.
