Children in care

Some children can’t live with their families. We help them stay safe, healthy and happy.

What does “looked after” mean?

A child is “looked after” when the council helps care for them.
This might be:

  • Living with foster carers
  • Living in a children’s home
  • Staying with family or friends
  • Getting ready to live on their own

How we help

We make sure every child:

  • Has a safe place to live
  • Gets support with school and learning
  • Can see a doctor or nurse when needed
  • Has someone to talk to
  • Can share their views and be listened to

Our promise

We follow the Staffordshire Pledge. It’s a set of promises to children in care and care leavers.
We promise to:

  • Keep you safe
  • Listen to you
  • Help you learn and grow
  • Support your health and wellbeing
  • Treat you fairly and with respect

The Voice Project

This is where you can have your say on issues that matter to you. We listen, so that we can make things better for the future.

U-pack information guides

The following U-pack documents explain the looked after system and what it's like to live with foster carers. They also give children the opportunity to say what they think.
