Project update; Structural Maintenance Work for the A5121 Derby Road, Burton Upon Trent

Staffordshire County Council will shortly begin carrying out works on Phase 3 of the A5121 Derby Road scheme. Works will take place from number 202 Derby Road to the Derby Turns Island.
The programme of works will include the removal of the existing carriageway surface and replacing it with a new surface, along with new road markings, (and associated preparatory works known as ‘civil works’), which will include site investigation works, ground radar surveys, drainage repairs and clearance, kerbing replacement, ironwork repairs and footway improvements

When are the works taking place?

Phase 1 - Following the planned completion of the civil works outside the residential properties, the one-way system will switch to the side of the carriageway closest to the properties, enabling us to complete the works outside the business frontages. The one-way system switch over will take place on Sunday 5 July 2026, ahead of the next phase of the works starting on Monday 6 July 2026 from 7.30am. Works will continue to take place Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7.30am and 5pm.

The one-way system along Derby Road will be in operation 24/7 in the direction from the Pirelli Island to the Derby Turns Island, heading towards Burton town centre. Please note that during these works, there will be no on street parking available, as this lane will carry live traffic, this is for the safety of the general public and workforce; however, access to driveway/business frontages will be maintained.

The civil works are due to be completed on Friday 31 July 2026.

On Sunday 2 August 2026, the one-way system will change and operate on the side of the carriageway closest to the business frontages, allowing us to complete the works outside the residential properties.

On Monday 3 August 2026, we will begin removing the first section of the carriageway to allow us to strengthen the sub-base from property number 4 to number 8 Derby Road, there will be a period of time when entering and existing driveway frontages will not be permitted due to large open excavations on the highway. Therefore, if you require the use of your vehicle at any time during this phase of the works, then please make alternative parking arrangements.

Please contact us in advance or speak to our site team, so that we can help with any specific needs or requirements during this phase of the works. These works will be undertaken under the one-way system and are due to be completed by Saturday 8 August 2026.

Following the completion of this phase of the works, the one-way system will be removed on Sunday 9 August 2026.

On Monday 10 August 2026, we will begin removing the second section of the carriageway to allow us to strengthen the sub-base from property number 91 to number 101 Derby Road, there will be a period of time when entering and existing driveway frontages will not be permitted due to large open excavations on the highway. Therefore, if you require the use of your vehicle at any time during this phase of the works, then please make alternative parking arrangements.

Please contact us in advance or speak to our site team, so that we can help with any specific needs or requirements during this phase of the works.

These works will be undertaken under a 24/7 road closure, and this section of road will be closed from the Pirelli Island to property number 91 Derby Road. Access to The Maltings Industrial Estate and Coyte Carpets will be via the local signed diversion route along Hawkins Lane to Derby Road. Works are due to be completed by Saturday 15 August 2026.

Phase 2 - From Monday 17 August 2026 we will begin our second phase of the scheme, which is the overnight carriageway resurfacing works (Monday to Friday), between the hours of 7pm to 6am. Works will include, utility survey works ahead of removing the existing carriageway surface and re-setting the carriageway ironworks. The new carriageway surface will then be laid, ahead of emptying the highway gullies and finally applying new road markings.

The carriageway surfacing will be undertaken in five phases; this is to allow for business and residential access. During the overnight carriageway resurfacing works, there will be no on street parking on the highway between Monday to Friday. This restriction is necessary to ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce, access to driveway frontages will be maintained, however there may be short delays whilst materials are being removed and cured.

Please see the table, which provides details about the road closures, duration and details about the phases of work.

Due to the size and scale of construction machines being used and to ensure the safety of the general public and workforce, this phase of works will be carried out under full road closures. To allow the carriageway reconstruction works to be carried out safely, and to minimise disruption, we’ll be working overnight when traffic volumes are lower.

Businesses along the areas of work will be open as usual with limited access for periods of time whilst materials are being removed and cured. This is for safety of the public and the safety of the workforce.

Additional signage will be placed at key strategic points, directing members of the public wanting to access local businesses during the road closures. Designated traffic management personnel will be positioned at either end of the closure points to offer advice and assist with access to properties and businesses within the closure points.

Following the recent completion of the carriageway resurfacing works on Derby Turns Island, Staffordshire County Council Engineers identified several areas of irregularity within the new surface. Our contractor has agreed to resurface the areas effected at no additional cost to Staffordshire County Council.

These works will take one night to complete and will take place between 7pm and 6am on Thursday 10 September 2026. For these works to take place safely, the roundabout will be closed, and a diversion route put in place along with two-way traffic lights between Horninglow Road and Derby Road.

All carriageway resurfacing works are due to be completed by Friday 11 September 2026.

Diversion Route

A primary road diversion route will be in place for through traffic during the works, along the A38.

A local signed diversion route will also be in place during the works, along Hawkins Lane.

How long will the works take?

Approximately 12 weeks to complete the works.

Will I be able to access my home/business?

When the overnight road closures are in place, designated personnel will be at either end of the closure points to offer assistance and assist with access when safe to do so to residential properties and businesses. Please speak to the site team, so that we can help with any specific needs or requirements you may have during this works.

Please allow extra time for your journeys and, where possible, please use alternative routes to avoid delays. Please do not ignore road closure signage.

For the number of properties within the work area, access will be maintained when safe to do so, however at times access may not be possible.

Pedestrian access along the length of the works will be maintained throughout.

What effect could the works have on me?

We take care to make sure that work is completed with the minimum of disturbance to the local community but as with any major works, some minor traffic delays may occur.

The works may at times be noisy, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disturbance caused. We’ll do our best to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. We like to thank you for your patience during this works.

Please take care to plan your journeys and if necessary move vehicles to an accessible location.

Ahead of the works taking place, residential letters will be delivered to affected properties with specific scheme details

How you can help us

You can help us to get the job done with the minimum of fuss by following this advice:

  • Please keep children away from the works to ensure their safety.
  • Please drive slowly and cautiously through the works.
  • Check your shoes before entering your property or car to make sure there is no bitumen from the works.

If you have any questions about the work or, concerns about how the work is being carried out, please do not hesitate to contact us via Staffordshire Highways.
