Notification of carriageway reconstruction works for the U4012 Bretby Lane
Staffordshire County Council will be carrying out road improvement works on Bretby Lane.
Where the work will take place
The work will be carried out on:
- Bretby Lane, from the junction with Ashby Road to the Bretby Lane roundabout
- Bretby Lane up to the South Derbyshire boundary
- The junctions of:
- Moat Bank Lane
- Melbourne Road
- Empire Road
What work will be carried out?
The programme includes:
- Removing the existing road surface and laying a new one
- Repainting road markings
- Drainage repairs and cleaning
- Kerb replacements
- Repairs to road ironwork, such as manhole covers and gullies
- Minor footway improvements
- Replacing damaged signs
- Cutting back grass and vegetation where it has reduced the width of footways
Before the main resurfacing work starts, we will also carry out site investigations and ground radar surveys.
When will the work take place?
Works are scheduled to start on Monday 12 October 2026.
The project is expected to take around 8 weeks to complete.
Civil works
From 7:30am on Monday 12 October 2026 we will begin the preparatory civil works.
These works will be carried out using multi way temporary traffic lights and are expected to be completed by Monday 16 November 2026.
Road resurfacing works
From Tuesday 17 November to Tuesday 8 December 2026, road resurfacing works will take place Monday to Friday between 7:30am and 5pm.
During these works we will:
- Remove the existing road surface.
- Reset carriageway ironwork.
- Lay the new road surface.
- Empty and clean highway gullies.
- Apply new road markings.
Road closures
The resurfacing works will be carried out under full daytime road closures to protect both the workforce and the public.
During the closures:
- A signed diversion route will be in place.
- Staff will be available at both ends of the closure to help residents and businesses access their properties where possible.
- Emergency services will be allowed through when it is safe to do so.
- Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.

Bus services
Bus stops within the work area will be suspended during the road closures.

Noise and disruption
We understand these works may cause inconvenience. Some noise and delays are unavoidable during major highway improvements.
Please:
- Drive slowly and carefully through any active roadworks.
- Follow signs and instructions from traffic management staff.
Weekend working may be used if required.
All dates are subject to change due to weather conditions or operational requirements.
