Burton town deal – Active travel improvement scheme

Staffordshire County Council and Amey are delivering phase two of walking and cycling improvements along Borough Road. This extends the recent Station Street project, linking the town centre to the railway station.

The improvements include:

  • Upgraded pedestrian crossings
  • Better footways and dropped kerbs
  • Segregated cycle facilities and cycle parking

These works are promoted by Staffordshire County Council and East Staffordshire Borough Council. Delivery is through the Infrastructure+ partnership.

What are the Works

The improvements along Borough Road, between Derby Street and Burton Town Hall, will include:

  • A 2.5m segregated two-way cycle track between Curzon Street and Wellington Street
  • Widened central islands and repositioned traffic signals for cyclists
  • Kerb realignment, repaving, and new cycle access points outside Town Hall
  • Footway and carriageway resurfacing
  • Upgraded traffic signs, lighting columns, and road markings

We will also improve:

  • The bus stop outside No. 14 Wellington Street
  • Traffic signals at Byrkley Street junctions with Derby Street and Waterloo Street

Programme of Works

  • Start date: 5 January 2026
  • End date: 7 May 2026
  • Duration: Approximately 18 weeks

Phase 1 and 2 works were completed as planned and roadworks have been suspended until 2 March 2026 to allow for other essential road maintenance in the area. Curzon Street road closure remains in place during this time.   

Traffic management will include temporary traffic lights with pedestrian crossings at Byrkley Street, Derby Street, Borough Road, and Waterloo Street gyratory. Diversion routes will be signed.

Traffic Management Phases

Phase 3 (02/03/26 – 16/03/26)

  • Road closure from Shobnall Road roundabout to Curzon Street
  • Full closure between Curzon Street and No. 6 Waterloo Street
  • King Edwards Place closed from Rangemore Street to Wellington Street
  • Diversion via Shobnall Road, Evershed Way, Orchard Street, St Peters Bridge, Stapenhill Road, Bridge Street, Horninglow Street, Derby Street, Borough Road

Phase 4 (16/03/26 – 15/04/26)

  • Road closure on Borough Road between No. 37 and Wellington Street
  • Lane closure on Derby Street from No. 10 to Borough Road junction
  • Diversion via Station Street, Union Street, Orchard Street, Evershed Way, Shobnall Road, Wellington Street

Phase 4a (08/04/26 – 10/04/26)

  • Road closure on Derby Street between Albert Street and Borough Road for road markings

Phase 5 (16/04/26 – 07/05/26)

  • A road closure on Wellington Street from the Splitter Island of Shobnall Road roundabout northbound to Curzon Street. There will be ‘access only’ for frontages within the closure points.  
  • A full road closure will be in place along Wellington Street / Waterloo Street northbound between Curzon Street and Byrkley Street, and on Byrkley Street between junction with Derby Street and Waterloo Street. 
  • There will be ‘access only’ for frontages to Waterloo Street from Borough Road and to Byrkley Street from Waterloo Street.
  • Diversion via Shobnall Road, Evershed Way, Orchard Street, St Peters Bridge, Stapenhill Road, Bridge Street, Horninglow Street, Derby Street, Borough Road 

Additional closures:

  • Curzon Street: 14/01/26 – 27/03/26
  • King Edwards Place: 02/03/26 – 07/05/26
