Reporting street lights
Each lighting unit has a unique ID number stencilled on it — usually black numbers on a white patch. Please include this in your report if possible.
Street lighting in Staffordshire
We maintain over 108,000 street lights and illuminated signs across Staffordshire. These help reduce accidents at night, improve public safety, and reduce the fear of crime.
What we maintain
We are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing adopted lighting units, including:
- Street lights and lampposts
- Lit road bollards
- Belisha beacons
- School flashers
- Lit traffic signs
- Subway lights
Some lighting is maintained by housing associations or developers, especially in new developments or private roads.
You can check who maintains a light using our street lights map.
Lighting for Staffordshire PFI contract
Lighting for Staffordshire has a 25-year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract to renew and maintain road lighting and illuminated signs. This covers all of Staffordshire except Stoke-on-Trent and motorways.
Emergency faults
We prioritise faults that pose the greatest risk. Emergency faults include:
- Exposed electrical cables
- Lighting columns that are leaning or knocked down
- Units with missing doors
What happens after you report a fault
After submitting a report, you’ll receive a reference number.
Lighting faults are inspected by Eon within 5 working days. Repairs are usually completed within a further 5 working days.
Traffic signal faults are handled by our own engineers. Issues like all lights being out or stuck on red are treated as urgent. Some faults can be reset remotely, others may need an engineer to visit.
During busy periods, repairs may take longer. You do not need to follow up once you have your reference number.
Common questions
A lighting column is leaning or has exposed wires — what should I do?
Report it immediately using the correct category. This helps us prioritise the work and notify an engineer quickly.
There’s no power to a light — what does that mean?
If there’s no power supply, we pass the issue to Western Power Distribution.
- Single column faults: repaired within 30 working days
- Multiple columns: repaired within 25 working days
I saw a crew attend a light but it’s still not working
Crews may need to inspect the unit first or may not have the right parts. If the issue is with the power supply, it will be passed to Western Power. The crew will return to complete the repair as soon as possible.

I want to speak to a lighting engineer
Due to the number of reports we receive, we usually respond electronically. If we think a conversation would help assess the issue, we’ll contact you.
A light I reported has been fixed but is faulty again
Please submit a new report online. Include your previous reference number so we can investigate why the fault has returned.
