Further information
Events on the highway
Events like parades, markets, or street parties can affect traffic. You must tell us about your event so we can help manage traffic and avoid disruption.
Emergency traffic management
If there's an emergency, contact the Traffic and Network team immediately. We may need to notify emergency services or other departments. You can apply for a permit after the emergency is dealt with.
Portable traffic signals
Signals must follow safety rules and be in good condition. If used 24/7, manual control may be needed. A qualified person must be on site during working hours. Stop and go boards must be available in case of failure.
Manual stop and go
Only qualified staff can use manual stop and go boards. Sites must be risk assessed. If controls are needed out of hours, use portable signals and notify the Traffic and Network team.
Lane closures on dual carriageways
Lane closures must follow Chapter 8 rules. Risk assessments are required. Closures are usually allowed during off-peak hours unless approved otherwise.
Temporary traffic orders
TTROs are used to close or restrict roads. They should only be requested when necessary. Emergency notices can last up to 21 days and may be extended once. If more time is needed, a full order must be applied for.
Responsibilities
- Do a letter drop to affected properties
- Use correct signs and diversion routes
- Notify us if dates change
- Reapply if delayed by more than 28 days
