The Borough Road cycleway project in Burton has progressed to the final phase of construction.
This project, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, is building a new two‑way cycle track along Borough Road to link Burton railway station directly with the Town Hall, helping to improve connections through the town centre and active travel options.
Crews have now started work on Wellington Street, Waterloo Street and Byrkley Street.
To allow this work to be carried out safely, road closures are in place on Wellington Street and Waterloo Street between Curzon Street and Byrkley Street, and on Byrkley Street between the junctions of Derby Street and Waterloo Street.
Access is being maintained for residents and businesses throughout the works.
A clearly signed diversion route takes drivers through Shobnall Road, Evershed Way, Orchard Street, St Peters Bridge, Stapenhill Road, Bridge Street, Horninglow Street and Derby Street.
The unexpected utility issues discovered under the road last month have now been resolved through close working between highways teams and utility companies, with no delay to the overall progress of the scheme.
The Borough Road Cycleway project remains on track to complete in May.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:
“It’s great to see this project entering its final stage and moving towards completion.
“When our crews encountered unexpected utility issues earlier in the works, they worked quickly and closely with utility companies to resolve them so the project could continue without delay.
“We’ve also taken the opportunity to carry out other essential highways repairs along the route at the same time. This joined‑up, location‑based approach helps reduce the need for repeat roadworks and limits disruption for residents and businesses.
“Once finished, this cycleway will be a real asset for Burton, providing better connections through the town centre and supporting more people to choose active ways to travel.”
This £1.2 million Borough Road cycleway project is funded by £900,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation, with an additional £200,000 from the county council to carry out other essential highways repairs along the route at the same time.
