Support for Adult Carers

Find out about support for adult carers, Carer’s Assessments, local services, taking a break and planning for emergencies.

Am I a carer?

You may be an unpaid carer if you regularly help someone who could not manage without your support. You do not need to live with the person you care for.

You may be a carer if you help someone with:

  • washing, dressing or eating
  • medicines or appointments
  • staying safe at home or when out
  • emotional support or company
  • travel, shopping or household tasks

There is no minimum number of hours you need to spend caring to ask for a Carer’s Assessment.

Support you can get

If you are an unpaid carer, you can:

  • ask for a free Carer’s Assessment
  • get information, advice and local support
  • get help to plan for emergencies and changes
  • get support to take a break from caring
  • tell your GP that you are a carer so they know about your caring responsibilities

Next steps

If you think you are an unpaid carer, you can ask for a free Carer’s Assessment.
