Housing with Care (Extra Care Housing)

Housing with care – sometimes called extra care, assisted living, or sheltered housing – gives you the security of your own home with care and support available on site.

What is it?

  • Self-contained flat with your own front door
  • 24-hour care and support available if needed
  • On-site facilities such as a café, lounge, or hair salon
  • Social activities you can join if you choose

Why choose housing with care?

  • You stay in control of your home and your life
  • Couples and friends can live together
  • Care can increase or decrease as your needs change
  • A real community feel with a mix of people

How is it different from a care home?

  • You have your own private home (rent, buy, or shared ownership)
  • You decide who comes in and when
  • You keep your independence but have peace of mind that help is nearby

How to find a scheme

How to apply

  • If you pay for your own care, contact the housing provider directly
  • If you qualify for council support, your social care worker will help with the application and financial assessment
