Home adaptations and Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG)
A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) can help pay for major adaptations to your home to help you live safely and independently.
Adaptations must be assessed as necessary and appropriate for your needs before funding can be approved.
Examples of adaptations a DFG may fund
A DFG may help pay for:
- stair lifts
- through-floor lifts
- level-access showers
- accessible bathrooms
- widening doorways
- improving access to rooms
- adapting heating controls
- adapting lighting controls
- other major changes that help you move around and use your home safely
These adaptations are designed to help you remain independent and make everyday activities easier.
What a DFG does not usually cover
A DFG is not intended for smaller items of equipment or everyday aids.
This includes items such as:
- grab rails
- walking sticks
- shower chairs
- small daily living aids
These types of equipment are often available through other services and support routes.
How do I know if I need a DFG?
You may wish to consider a DFG if:
- you are finding it difficult to move around your home
- you cannot safely access key areas such as your bathroom or bedroom
- you need major changes to make your home more accessible
- specialist equipment or structural adaptations would help you remain independent
