Adaptations and equipment: major home changes with a disabled facilities grant

Find out how to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to make your home safer and more accessible.

Costs and funding

What’s included and what might cost extra

Adaptations costing £1,000 or less
If you’re assessed as eligible for care and support, these smaller adaptations are usually provided at no cost to you.

Adaptations costing more than £1,000
For larger adaptations, you may need to contribute towards the cost. This will be decided through a financial assessment.

Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)

If you need major adaptations, such as a stair lift or level-access shower, you may qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

  • The grant can cover larger works if you meet the eligibility criteria.
  • It is means-tested, so the amount you pay depends on your financial circumstances.
