Museum service overview

Staffordshire County Museum Service

Staffordshire County Council returned management of the Shugborough Estate to the National Trust in November 2016.  Parts of the County Museum & Servants' Quarters and the museum displays at Shugborough Park Farm will continue to be open to the public when the estate re-opens under National Trust management in March 2017.

Over the next 3 years the County Museum Service will be transferring reserve collections to new, improved stores in the Stafford area.

In the longer term the Museum Service's new base will be as part of the new Staffordshire History Centre which is to be developed on the site of the Staffordshire Record Office over the next few years.

Associated with the Staffordshire History Centre project will be an extensive programme of temporary and touring exhibitions and outreach activities across Staffordshire, using our collections and expertise from the Museum Service, Archive Service and William Salt Library.

Museum projects and programmes

Moving On

To help us through this transitional period the Museum Service has just been awarded £104,000 of Museum Resilience funding by Arts Council England.  A new programme of outreach work across Staffordshire will continue to make use of our wonderful museum collections, and to maintain the profile of the Museum Service over the next 3 years. This will include:

  • Developing two new touring exhibitions (featuring our puppet and childhood collections).
  • New resources for rural schools.
  • New reminiscence boxes and materials for our work with older people in care.
  • An ambitious project to digitise our nationally important carriage collection.

All this work will involve working in partnership with other museums, community groups and volunteers.

In addition, we run various projects throughout Staffordshire and the West Midlands. For more information about our projects, or for advice and information, please contact us.
