Photographic Permits and Use of Cameras

Readers are advised that it is necessary to obtain a photographic permit for the use of your own camera in the library’s reading rooms.

From 1 April 2019, the following permit fees will apply:

  • One day permit- £8.00 (irrespective of the number of photographs taken).
  • Annual permit- £50.00 (irespective of the number of photographs taken). The permit must be used within one calendar year of date of issue.

A single permit will be valid in the library and also in the record offices of the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Archive Service (Staffordshire Record Office and Stoke-on-Trent City Archives). Readers who purchase permits will be asked to produce the permit for library and archive service staff on each of the days on which they wish to use it.

The provision of copies of documents in the care and custody of the William Salt Library is subject to current copyright law and our preservation policy. The purchase of a photographic permit does not confer exemptions to either. Anyone possessing a camera permit must therefore consult with the reading room staff before using their camera in each case to ensure:

• That there are no copyright restrictions.
• That the copyright form has been correctly completed.
• That no folding, creasing or other damage will be caused to the document in the process of being photographed.

Please note that the use of flash photography, photographic lighting and tripods is not permitted in our reading rooms. This is to avoid disruption to the work of other readers and to allow free movement for people using the reading rooms. If you wish to use such photographic equipment, separate arrangements must be made with the library staff. An additional fee will be applicable for direct supervision in another area away from the main reading rooms. Please note that if you wish to use a mobile phone as a camera, it will be necessary to obtain a photographic permit. Mobile phones being used as cameras must be on silent mode.

Readers are reminded that the William Salt Library offers a full range of reprographics services. Please ask the staff for details of available options.
