Trading Standards officers at Staffordshire County Council have launched an investigation following the seizure of illicit tobacco and illegal vapes in East Staffordshire.

Officers, supported by Staffordshire Police and specialist search dogs, made the discovery during the raid on Wednesday 17 December.  6,360 cigarettes, 3.6 kg of hand-rolling tobacco and 1,666 vapes with an estimated retail value of £19,354 were seized.

When entering the premises, officers witnessed staff attempting to dispose of suspected counterfeit tobacco by throwing it onto a nearby roof. Further investigation revealed a concealed delivery system at the rear of the premises, designed to move illegal goods from an upstairs storeroom into the shop below.

The business, now under investigation, could face prosecution and could be forced to close.

Anthony Screen, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Resilience at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“The sale of illegal tobacco and vapes on our high streets and in our communities is something that we will not tolerate.

“These products not only undermine legitimate businesses but pose serious health risks, especially to young people. Our enforcement teams are actively cracking down on rogue traders and anyone caught selling these items will face the full force of the law, including prosecution and closure.

“The sale of illicit tobacco and vapes is not a victimless crime. It fuels organised criminal networks and undermines the safety of our streets.”

People can report the sale of illegal, dangerous or counterfeit goods on the Trading Standards Report It webpage or by calling the confidential helpline on 01785 330356.
