To look at original records you will need to sign up to the Archives Card scheme; more information and a list of valid forms of ID can be found here, Card Guidelines (archivescard.com). You can complete the online form before your visit and then show your ID on your first visit so we can verify your account on the day. When you have your new Archives Card it is valid in all participating archives.

Ordering documents in advance

To make best use of your time we advise ordering documents in advance of your visit. You can search our online catalogue Gateway to the Past to find documents, and please let us know your research area at the time of booking. Please contact us if you cannot find what you are looking for.

If you wish to photograph documents you may purchase a day or an annual photography permit (List of fees and charges - Staffordshire County Council). You can pay on the day using cash or by card online in advance (please ask staff at the time of booking). Usual copyright restrictions will apply. If you wish to photograph items in the Spode Collection this requires advance permission, please contact us for more details.

We also provide a full reprographics service, please see (Copying Services at Stoke Archives - Staffordshire County Council).
