Developing Independence

Build your confidence and independence with this wellbeing course that will help you to progress with everyday skills. Travel safely, cook simple meals, shop smartly and stay safe online to live more confidently.

Aims of Course

The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in Staffordshire, Staffordshire Moorlands (excludes Stoke-on-Trent). The Independence and Me course supports individuals with wellbeing and independence and is ideal for those recovering from mental ill health, with a learning difficulty/ disability or unemployed who want to enhance their independence, resilience and overall wellbeing.

Entry Requirements 

No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in the countryside, animals and nature would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.

Course Content

Learn how to develop independence through practical hands-on activities. Learn food safety and cook with home-grown produce, plant and care for your own food, use public transport more confidently and explore apps that support health. Creative sessions include making a winter flower arrangement for the home and crafting a willow bird feeder for the garden.Developing skills for everyday living and wellbeing.

How you will learn?

Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of user-friendly learning styles and activities.

Learner support

Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners' needs, whether it be support with completing your learner journal, an I-pad or a person to build confidence and guide learners in the right direction.

Course Assessments

You will be assessed through regular activities such as quizzes, practical tasks, and participation in group work. You will complete handouts and a weekly journal to reflect on your progress. Assessment focuses on your improvement and effort rather than formal tests, helping you build confidence and develop skills at your own pace.

Learning Materials

Please wear appropriate clothing for some outdoor activity such as the willow work and seed planting.You will need to bring a packed lunch, all other materials and resources will be provided.Please remember to bring personal items you may need such as reading glasses.

What can learners progress onto next?

There will be a selection of courses available for term 2 as a follow on. These courses support health and wellbeing, upskilling in maths and English, and include community-based options or courses where the community comes to the learner.
