Cycle for change scheme

A new partnership between Staffordshire County Council, HM Prison Service and Halfords is helping people get into work by providing refurbished bikes.

Last updated: 18th May

Used bikes from Staffordshire’s recycling centres are donated to HMP Drake Hall. Women in prison repair and restore the bikes as part of a training programme supported by Halfords. While doing this, they learn useful skills and gain qualifications.

The repaired bikes are then given to people starting jobs or training through the county council’s employment service. They are also given to schools and young people in care. This helps people travel to work or education cheaply and easily. Helmets, lights and locks are included, paid for through “Rescue Me” reuse events.

The scheme helps the environment by reducing waste and supports rehabilitation by helping people build skills, confidence and independence.

Residents can support the scheme by donating unwanted bikes at selected Staffordshire recycling centres.
