Asbestos

Cement bonded asbestos is found in many places in the home including rainwater pipes, gutters, water tanks, insulation boards, garage/shed roofs, boiler flues and domestic equipment such as ovens, heaters and ironing boards. Generally, asbestos materials in good condition can be left in place and painted but should not be drilled, sanded or sawn.

Please note:  There are quantity, size and site restrictions for asbestos. There are also restricted times of between 1pm & 3pm at those sites that accept asbestos. Please find further details below.

We do suggest that you view the webpage of the site you wish to use to check for any issues that may affect your visit on that day.

Leek Recycling Centre cannot currently accept asbestos on Saturdays

Asbestos is a name given to several naturally occurring fibrous minerals that have crystallised to form fibres. Asbestos fibres do not dissolve in water or evaporate, they are resistant to heat, fire, chemical and biological degradation and are mechanically strong.

Asbestos pieces larger than 3 foot by 3 foot cannot be accepted. Asbestos is hazardous and should not be broken up under any circumstances.

What products contain asbestos?

  • Older paint and plaster
  • Home insulation
  • Garage and garden roofing
  • Concrete and cement
  • Gutters and pipe lagging
  • Roof tiles

How to dispose of asbestos?

Asbestos can be taken to recycling centres for disposal. There is a disposal restriction of 4 sheets or 4 bags (approximately 25 kg rubble bags) per household every 6 months.

Asbestos must be double wrapped in heavy duty clear polythene and sealed securely with tape before it can be accepted on site.

Our staff cannot help you in bagging these materials because of legal and health implications.

For larger quantities, householders must contact specialist licensed firms to handle that material.

Asbestos should not be broken up.

Where can I take asbestos?

Asbestos can only be accepted at 5 of our recycling centres between 1pm and 3pm on the days that they are open.

Please check information on Warwickshire County Council's website for asbestos disposal at Lower House Farm, Baddesley Ensor.

Where is it in your home?

Asbestos may be part of any commercial or domestic building which was built or refurbished before the year 2000. Do not try to repair or remove any asbestos materials yourself. If you are not sure if your home contains asbestos, then it is best to leave it alone.
