The Project Brief is a written document, compiled by the Development Officer or Development Support Officer following discussions with the school concerning the requirements and outcomes of the project. The brief will be used to communicate these requirements and desired outcomes to the design team in order that the scheme may be developed. The project brief also acts as a document that formalises the philosophy of the project into words, capturing and defining the extent of the project in order that the Head teacher and Governing Body may approve the concepts prior to engaging the design team and other professional consultants.

The Project brief may include all or some of the following information;

  • School specific information,
  • Project detail related to guidance from DfE and other relevant sources,
  • Financial information,
  • Other relevant data affecting organisation or procurement of the works,
  • Supporting data to assist with any Planning Approval application,
  • Approval by Head Teacher and Governors.

The process of drafting the Project Brief will involve all stakeholders. The final approval of the Brief rests with the Head Teacher and Governors before the design team is commissioned to develop the proposal further
