Who can apply?

Anyone with parental responsibility can apply. If parents are separated, you must agree on preferences before applying. We may ask for evidence of this agreement. We cannot intervene in disputes between parents.

When should I apply?

• Applications open: 1 September 2026
• Applications close: 31 October 2026
• Offers made: 1 March 2027

Why do I need to apply?

Children are not automatically allocated a secondary/high school place.  You must apply to be considered for a place at one of your preferred school(s). 

If no application is received, your child will be allocated a place at a school with available spaces.  This may not be your catchment school, and transport assistance may not be provided.

How do I find my catchment area school?

Use our online search and compare to find your catchment school as well as other useful information.   You must name the catchment school on your application to be considered for a place.  Admission is not guaranteed.

Some schools do not give priority to children residing in the designated catchment area.

How many schools can I apply for?

You can name up to three schools. If you want to apply for more, please contact us.  All preferences are considered equally.

Should I list other preferences if I know the school I want?

It is recommended you list up to three preferences.  If your preferred school cannot offer a place, listing other schools increases your chances of securing a preferred alternative.

Can I apply for schools outside Staffordshire?

Yes.  If you live in Staffordshire, you can apply online.  We will share your application with the relevant local authorities.

If you live outside Staffordshire, apply through your home authority.

How are places allocated?

Each school listed on your application will be considered individually and fairly against its published admission arrangements.   All preferences are considered equally - schools do not use a “first preference first” or “first come, first served” policy.  If more than one school can be offered, the highest-ranked preference will be allocated.

Are exceptional circumstances considered? Do I need to provide additional information?

Some schools may consider exceptional medical or social circumstances.  Please check each school’s admission arrangements to see what additional information in required.

If a school requires a supplementary form or additional evidence (e.g. medical documents, baptism certificates),  this can be submitted to the school directly or the School Admissions Team.

What happens if I apply late?

Late applications may be considered after on-time applications.  This could affect your chances of getting a preferred school.  You will still have the right to appeal or for your child to be added to a waiting list.

Can I change my preferences?

Up until the closing date you can make changes to your online application – please remember to resubmit.

After the closing date, you can contact us to make any changes.  If your changes include new school preferences, your application may be considered after those made on time.
