Who is the course aimed at:
Whether you are looking to learn a new hobby, improve your practical skills, support your wellbeing through creative activities or explore a potential pathway into further learning, this course offers an enjoyable and rewarding introduction to the world of woodwork and tree science.
The course combines tree science, sustainability and creativity, helping you understand where natural materials come from and how they can be used responsibly. You will have opportunities to work on individual projects, create handcrafted wooden items to take home and gain confidence in using tools and equipment.
Along the way, you will develop problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills while building confidence in your abilities.
Entry requirements:
This course is for residents aged 19 and over living in Staffordshire, excluding Stoke-on-Trent. No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in woodworking, construction and tree science would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal.
Course content:
Discover the fascinating world of trees while developing practical woodworking skills. Learn how trees grow from seedlings to maturity, explore the unique qualities of different types of wood, and gain hands-on experience in measuring, designing and creating wooden projects. Build confidence while developing new skills and creating handcrafted wooden items to take home.
Learning methods:
Learning takes place in a welcoming rural setting and may include outdoor activities that encourage observation and exploration of the natural environment. You will engage in face-to-face learning delivered in both classroom and outdoor environments. The course incorporates a variety of learning styles—including hands-on practical activities, visual demonstrations, group discussions, and individual reflection—to support different preferences and enhance understanding. This blended approach encourages active participation, collaboration, and real-world application of skills.
Learning materials:
Please wear appropriate clothing for the course, such as sturdy, close-fitting garments. Long hair should be tied back, and avoid loose clothing or wrist jewellery for safety. Safety glasses will be provided, but if you wear prescription glasses, please bring them along. All other materials and tools will be supplied. Consider wearing comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for workshop activities. If you have any specific needs, please inform us in advance.
Learner support:
We provide tailored support to help you succeed in woodworking and tree science. Whether you need assistance with technical skills, understanding measurements, or using tools safely, our experienced tutors will guide you. Support is also available for literacy, numeracy, and health and safety awareness to ensure you gain confidence and work effectively throughout the course.
Course assessments:
Learners will be reviewed at the start, throughout, and at the end of the course. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment of their course or pursue additional areas of interest. On going informal assessments take place via observations, discussions and group activities with feedback provided from your tutor or volunteers.
What can learners do next/progress onto?
After completing this course, learners may choose to progress to other courses with UMRA that support community involvement. They may also develop their mathematics and English skills through dedicated courses, or continue their learning by enrolling on an accredited woodworking course at college.
Are there any fees?
This course is fully funded so there are no course fees.
