Who is the course aimed at?
This course is ideal for you if you are returning to work or looking to start a career in a new industry. On completion, you will gain the skills and knowledge that employers recognise and value.
Skills Bootcamps are funded by the UK Government and are available at no cost to eligible learners.
For employers, a contribution is required:
- 10% for small and medium-sized enterprises (fewer than 250 employees)
- 30% for larger organisations
Entry requirements
To apply, you must:
- Be aged 19 or over
- Have the right to live and work in the UK
- Live or work in Staffordshire
- Not be enrolled on another government-funded course
- Be able to commit to the full course duration
- Have a good standard of English and maths
Course content - what you will learn
Learners will gain practical experience in:
- MIG, MAG, TIG and MMA welding
- Visual inspection of welds (including defects and imperfections)
- Welding to coded standards
Additional support includes:
- For employed learners: bespoke training aligned to company processes and materials
- For unemployed learners: employability skills such as:
- CV preparation
- Job search techniques
- Interview skills
The Business Development Team will work with employers to identify job opportunities and apprenticeships.
Learning materials
All learning materials will be provided.
Learning methods
Training is delivered face-to-face at the Walsall training centre:
- 2 days per week over 6 weeks
The course has a strong practical focus, allowing learners to develop hands-on skills required to become a coded welder.
Delivery includes:
- Practical demonstrations by the tutor
- One-to-one training in state-of-the-art welding booths
- Visual and hands-on learning approaches
Learning support
You will receive:
- A dedicated tutor to support your learning
- An engagement officer for pastoral support
Before starting, you will complete an assessment to identify your learning needs.
Equipment:
- All required materials are provided
- Unemployed learners: PPE will be supplied (overalls, safety footwear, gloves)
- Employed learners: expected to provide appropriate (Personal protection equipment) PPE

How you will be assessed
At the beginning of the course you will be assessed on your prior knowledge
Further assessments include:
- Training aligned to ISO 9606-1 standards
- Understanding welding terminology and procedure sheets
- Measuring and evaluating weld quality
Final assessments are independently verified. Successful weld samples are submitted for laboratory testing.
