Who is the course aimed at
This course is for learners who would like to explore the fascinating science behind flowers and plants while developing practical and creative skills. Discover how plants grow, reproduce and adapt to their environment while learning about biodiversity, pollination, sustainability and the important role plants play in supporting wildlife and healthy ecosystems. You will explore topics such as plant structure, soil health, seed germination, climate and seasonal growth, helping you gain a deeper understanding of the natural world.
The course encourages curiosity, creativity and personal growth, helping learners connect with nature while developing practical skills that can be used at home, in the community or as a stepping stone to further learning. Whether you are interested in gardening, nature, sustainability, floristry or simply enjoy learning something new, this course offers an enjoyable and inspiring opportunity to discover the science of fabulous flowers and plants.
Entry Requirements
This course is for residents aged 19 and over living in Staffordshire, excluding Stoke-on-Trent. This programme is designed for people who are self-motivated and eager to progress to the next stage of their learning while supporting their wellbeing and gaining valuable experience that brings them closer to volunteering or employment.
What you will learn
Discover the science behind flowers and plants while developing practical floristry and botanical design skills. Learn about plant and flower structure, growth, pollination, sustainability, the effects of climate change on plants, and biodiversity. Create seasonal floral designs using different flowers, wreaths, bottle gardens and botanical gifts, visit a place of interest and explore how to cost, market and sell your creations through community and enterprise events.
Learning Materials
All materials, tools and equipment required for the practical activities will be provided, including flowers, plants, natural materials and craft resources. Learners may wish to bring their own gardening gloves and any unusual materials they would like to use, an apron or old clothing suitable for practical work, a notebook and any personal glasses required for close work. Comfortable footwear suitable for outdoor activities and visits is recommended. We will supply you with your own folder and pen.
Learning Methods
Learners will develop skills through practical workshops, demonstrations, outdoor activities, and visits. They will create floral designs and botanical displays while exploring plant science, sustainability, and nature, building confidence and creativity through hands-on learning. Individual learning plans will monitor and support personal development and progress.
Learner Support
Learners will be supported throughout the course by the tutor through demonstrations, guidance, discussions and individual support. Activities can be tailored to meet individual learning needs, abilities and confidence levels. Additional support is available where required. Learners will be encouraged to work at their own pace and develop confidence through practical achievement.
How you will be assessed
Learners will be assessed through ongoing observation, practical activities, discussions, learner journals and completion of creative projects. They will demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating floral designs, botanical products and sustainable plant projects. Learners will complete reflection activities, costing and marketing tasks, and an end-of-course review to celebrate achievements and identify progression opportunities.

Throughout your course, you will receive information and guidance about further learning opportunities available to you. Learners can progress onto additional courses with Upper Moreton Rural Activities, as well as volunteering opportunities or employment pathways with different organisations.
